About America’s Cemetery®

444 flags flying along the cemetery’s Avenue give it a remarkable character unlike that of any other cemetery.

The seeds for America’s Cemetery® were planted on February 11, 1980, the 100th day of captivity for 52 Americans held hostage in Iran. On that day, 100 flags were raised along the avenue leading into Hillcrest Memorial Park to increase public awareness of the crisis. Another flag was added each day until the hostages were released on January 21, 1981, the 444th day after the embassy was seized. The next issue of Time Magazine featured a photo of the Avenue’s flags on its cover, acknowledging it as a symbol of American patriotism, pride, and courage.

Three decades and 18,000 replacement flags later, the Avenue of 444 Flags leads to and surrounds the War on Terror Veterans Memorial. The flags honor all military service people, past and present, while the twelve steel and glass monuments of the War on Terror Veterans Memorial list the names of all the serviceman and servicewoman who have given their lives for us during this never-ending war.

America’s Cemetery® also features separate monuments to honor the veterans of World War I, World War II, The Korean War, and Vietnam.

This is America’s Cemetery® not just because of its patriotic symbols and the great number of veterans buried here. It also offers every burial option available in the country today: traditional in-ground, interment in mausoleums, cremation burials and niches, and green burial.

America’s Cemetery® made history by becoming the first cemetery in the country with a pet funeral home and crematory, as well as hillside gardens for the burial of pets or people with their pets.

Through its web presence, America’s Cemetery® celebrates the lives of people, living and deceased, through biographical stories, photos, and video interviews. We work with many organizations and web sites to assist in research and to add to the genealogical information available online.

With the breadth of its services, the commitment to honoring all Americans, and its dedication to the principles of this great nation, this truly is America’s Cemetery®.

Time Magazine 1/26/1981

52 hostages were confined in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran for 444 days. They were released on January 21, 1981. The next issue of Time Magazine featured a photo of The Avenue of 444 Flags on its cover. That was the eighth time the magazine had included coverage of the Avenue.
